Pope Benedict XVI has decreed that homosexuals cannot enter the priesthood. Here is an article from the International Herald Tribune about the decision. One would think the ambiguities and contradictions of the Bible would make it difficult for an ostensibly rational person to make such a declaration, but religion and rationality are seldon on the same side.

Banning gays from becoming priests is like so bad, but it is also stupid. Gays are the last source of “vocations” in the West. This edict if followed would have the same effect on the Church as a ban on gays would have in the world of ballet.
But I doubt if there will be any serious attempt to put this into action.

Whilst I agree entirely with you assessment of the likely effect of this ban if enforced, I want to take a little bit of an issue with the second part. It doesn’t matter whether they enforce it or not, the very existence of such a statute is deeply offensive and indicative of the thinking of the current Vatican (though the edict has it origins in the previous regime)
